Eclectic
What is Eclectic?
Eclectic is a freely-distributed, open source, cross-platform surface remeshing tool for Windows, Linux and SGI platforms. Eclectic is a surface meshing program. It creates a well-ordered, quad-dominant surface mesh for analytical purposes. Eclectic projects a quad mesh onto surfaces derived from existing meshes.

Who developed Eclectic?
Eclectic was developed by the U.S. Army TACOM. It is written entirely in C++ using Qt from TrollTech. ThermoAnalytics has agreed to host a website and provide a distribution point for Eclectic.

How much does Eclectic cost?
Eclectic is distributed without a fee, but does not include any support. Eclectic is provided under the QT Public License, QPL and the GNU General Public License, GPL.

Eclectic software is provided AS IS with NO WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, INCLUDING THE WARRANTY OF DESIGN, MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE.

About support
ThermoAnalytics does not offer any technical support for Eclectic. However, if you do have any bugs or feedback about the program, you can contact us and we will track this information. If Eclectic continues to be developed, this feedback will help determine what bugs will be fixed and what new features will be developed.

Key features

  • Quality mesh creation from poorly-conditioned meshes
  • Variable mesh density
  • Variable mesh projection angles
  • Join/separate surfaces/parts/elements—helps in subdivision of a single mesh into multiple parts
Bad Mesh In Good Mesh Out

Cross-Platform

Platforms—the user interface and files are common for all platforms— Windows, SGI, and Linux

General Limitations

Eclectic can very quickly deliver a high-quality mesh of several thousand elements. For larger models (more than 30,000 elements), Eclectic can still deliver a quality mesh, but the run time can be significant.

Furthermore, certain bugs seem more likely to be triggered when meshing objects in excess of 40,000 elements. For large systems, we therefore recommend breaking the model into components and meshing each individually.

Geometry Import Formats

  • Wavefront (*.obj)
  • Stereolithography (*.stl) (ascii, not binary)
  • RAW Triangles (*.raw)
  • FRED (*.fac)
  • FRED (*ASC.fac)
  • Xpatch (*.facet)
  • Native Eclectic (*.ecl)
  • BRL-CAD (*.asc, *.ascmap) A powerful BRL-CAD Importer and feature editor is also included. This powerful, stand-alone tool allows complex BRL-CAD surfaces to be simplified and reduced to significant features only.
Geometry Export Formats
  • Wavefront (*.obj) This filetype can be directly read into all TAI Software (RadTherm, WinTherm, and MuSES).
  • FRED (*ASC.fac)
  • XPatch (*.facet)
  • Stand-alone Eclectic to TDF Converter Included
